The Difference Between Selling Yourself and Communicating Your Value: 6 Valuable Tips
Engineers fail to recognize their own value and it is killing the industry.
We often think of engineers as shy introverts who like to crunch numbers. Instead, our work touches everyone in the world, regardless of where they live. Think about that.
If we continue to undermine our work, our profession will continue to lose thousands of people every year.
Here are 6 ways we can communicate our value:
Tip #1: Understand the importance of your hard skills
It all starts with knowing what you can do as an engineer.
What unique set of skills do you have that help millions of people every day?
Tip #2: Master your unique value proposition
Describe your value to your audience (the general public) and how you are different.
If people don’t know how you are affecting their lives, they won’t value what you do.
Tip #3: Be visible
Becoming a great speaker or writer is a powerful way to become more visible.
Share more of what you are doing online and within your company.
Tip #4: Build your brand
Create your own narrative and be authentic. Building a brand is the best way to do this.
Present facts about your skills and how they change the lives of others in a fun and engaging way.
Tip #5: Be authentic
People are attracted to people. Be yourself.
We all have a unique set of skills that others value.
Tip #6: Know your skills
Lastly, know what kind of problems you are solving.
As engineers, we are problem solvers. Dive deeper into what you can do to make others’ lives better.
